Gutter Maintenance in Olympia: Protect Your Roof Through the Rainy Season

Clogged gutters cause rotted fascia, roof edge leaks and wet basements. Here is a simple gutter maintenance plan for Olympia homes.

Gutters are easy to forget until they overflow. In Olympia, where it rains steadily from fall through spring and tall trees drop needles year-round, gutters do a huge amount of work. When they clog, water spills over the edge, soaks the fascia and soffits, splashes against siding, and pools around your foundation.

This guide covers why gutters matter for your roof, how often to clean them, warning signs to watch for, and simple upgrades that reduce maintenance.

Why Gutters Matter for Your Roof

Your roof and gutters work as one drainage system. Shingles send water down to the eaves, the drip edge directs it into the gutter, and downspouts carry it away from the house. When gutters back up, water can wick under the first row of shingles and into the roof deck along the edge. Over time, that leads to rotted sheathing, rotted fascia boards and leaks at the eaves, damage that is often blamed on the roof itself.

How Often to Clean Gutters in Olympia

Most homes here need gutter cleaning at least twice a year:

  • Late fall, after most leaves and needles have dropped and before the heaviest rain.
  • Late spring, to clear seeds, pollen, catkins and moss that washed off the roof over winter.

Homes under big firs or maples, common in West Olympia, Tanglewilde and around Boston Harbor, may need cleaning three or four times a year.

Warning Signs of Gutter Problems

  • Water pouring over the front of the gutter during rain
  • Plants or moss growing in the gutter
  • Sagging gutter sections or gutters pulling away from the fascia
  • Peeling paint, stains or soft wood on fascia boards
  • Granules from shingles collecting in the gutter (a sign of an aging roof)
  • Puddles or erosion near the foundation under downspouts
  • Leaking seams and corners

The Connection Between Moss and Gutters

Moss on the roof and clogged gutters go together. As moss dries and breaks loose, it washes into the gutters along with needles, forming dense mats that block downspouts. If your roof has moss, cleaning the gutters alone only solves half the problem. Our article on removing moss from your roof explains how to tackle both.

DIY Gutter Cleaning Safety

If you clean your own gutters, keep these tips in mind:

  • Use a sturdy ladder on firm, level ground, and have someone hold it.
  • Never lean the ladder against the gutter itself, which can bend or break.
  • Wear gloves; gutter debris can hide sharp metal and screws.
  • Scoop debris out by hand or with a plastic scoop, then flush with a hose to check flow.
  • Avoid walking on the roof, especially when it is wet or mossy.

For two-story homes and steep roofs, professional cleaning is the safer choice.

Upgrades That Reduce Maintenance

Gutter guards: Screens and covers keep larger debris out. In our area, fine needles can still get through some designs, so choose a guard rated for needles, and expect to clean the guard surface occasionally.

Larger downspouts: Oversized downspouts clog less often and move more water during heavy rain.

Proper slope and hangers: Gutters should slope slightly toward each downspout and be secured with hidden hangers every couple of feet.

Downspout extensions: Carry water several feet away from the foundation to protect crawl spaces and basements.

Replacing Gutters With a New Roof

If your gutters are old, leaking or sagging and your roof is due for replacement, doing both together makes sense. The roofer can install new drip edge and gutter apron correctly, and you avoid disturbing the new roof edge later. Our roof replacement service can include coordinating new gutters.

A Simple Seasonal Checklist

  1. September–October: Inspect the roof, treat moss, and trim branches.
  2. November: Clean gutters and downspouts after leaf drop.
  3. Winter: Watch for overflows during heavy rain and check after windstorms.
  4. May–June: Clean gutters again and check fascia and seams.
